The World Keeps Changing!

By Randy Bretzman, trustee chair

When I was growing up I was a little entrepreneur and had business cards that read, "Randy's Handy Service." One memory I have was a call to cut grass . . . wow, a job! When I got there with a push mower (that's right, no electric or gas), I found the grass was about 6-8" high. I took a running start and would clip maybe a foot at a time. My dad ended up coming over to see how I was doing . . . and if I recall, he ended up bringing over the power mower and helped me finish a job far too big for someone so young and without the right tools.

What I needed to succeed at this job was my desire, the right tool, and the guidance and support of my father. It took all of these to get the job done.

When I talk to my dad, it's incredible to hear how the world has changed in 89 years. Everything changes: seasons, governments, work, school, home, lifestyles, attitudes and perspectives.

I sometimes have to take a deep breath and say to myself that change is overall good, but it is God who is really in control and He is always there!

I've also learned that God has given me certain talents and limitations: I can't cook on a stove, but I can barbeque. I can't repair a car, but I know when to have maintenance done. I can't make a flower arrangement, but I can plant flowers. Each of us has a skill set, and God has led me to work as Trustee Chair.

In the first few months as Trustee, we've encountered some real challenges, like the flood and spring clean-up. What I have seen is that the necessary items for success are here at LCC. We have the tools, the desire and the guidance to do the job. I would like to especially thank Dan Doherty and Dan Frost for their guidance and assistance in these tasks. The tremendous outpouring of help ranges from longstanding members of the church to children that simply wanted to help!

One of my favorite songs growing up was Peter, Paul & Mary's "If I Had A Hammer." Most of you know the words,

"If I had a hammer, I'd hammer in the morning, I'd hammer in the evening all over this land, I'd hammer out danger, I'd hammer out warning, I'd hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters, all over this land . . ."

This song took on new meaning for me as I continue to work in the ministry God has led me to at the church. Look around, the church is changing. Thank you to all the families that have so willingly jumped in to help make our church look as beautiful on the outside as it does on this inside!
