" . . . the things I cannot change . . ." I'm writing this article following the biggest stock drop ever in history of 777 points. What followed that evening was broadcast after broadcast of economic "experts" telling us why we're in the mess we're in. Certainly many consumers have become victims of economic woes . . .things that we simply can't change. In late August, I saw first-hand some of the growing carnage, when I was "retired early" from my financial management position.
" . . . the courage to change the things I can . . ." What Laurel and I came to ask ourselves was, could we now be in God's plan to finally move to Oregon? The task of selling the house, finding a job in the Pacific Northwest and keeping our teenagers and grandpa positive about a move is certainly a daunting task. But we knew we could place our faith in God's hand, which gives us the courage to change our lives.
" . . . the wisdom to know the difference . . ." OK, I admit that we're working on this one!
As Trustee Chair, I've experienced God's grace and the ability to discern what I can affect and what I can't. The trustee team is proud of many positive changes this year at LCC! First, we entered 2008 with the confidence of knowing we would be flood- free! That left us with primarily handling basic maintenance items. Certainly with an aging facility those repairs will always continue, but it was the collective efforts of the trustee team along with the many willing volunteers for spring clean-up that made clean-up and maintenance possible.
We still have projects that I would hope could be accomplished next year, budget permitting. Some of these include an updated phone system, new tables, timber stairs leading from the back patio to the kid's zone and some additional bookshelves in the nursery. But in the midst of the great economic crisis in our country, we at LCC have the ability to do things that take some time and effort, not just money! For you outside folks, weeding, cutting wood, cutting down trees, watering plants and flowers are always welcome! On the inside, there are always some cleanup duties that Dan Doherty would welcome help with, I'm sure.
And so I'm now nearing the end of my term as Trustee Chair. I've had a few challenging projects, but a multitude of positive experiences. As with most people working toward a common goal, there is a unity and bonding that occurs. While we accomplished a lot in 2008, and we look forward to 2009, I would ask for your support and prayers for our new Trustee Chair as you have provided for me.
It is my prayer that as a church we can embrace the serenity prayer as it relates to not only our personal lives, but to our church lives as well.
